Our Unfulfilled Dreams
As
Emerson Booker says, there are
still many things that would enhance the services we offer at our beautiful
Gentry County Library. Raising the money needed to finish the lower level and
make it a real usable space would be a wonderful fulfillment of Aletha
Whittington’s dreams for the Gentry County Library. We have the many original
copies of local newspapers, photographs, and other important genealogical and
historic records. These records and photographic materials have complex physical
and chemical structures that present special preservation challenges to the
librarian and archivist. Since the birth of photography in the late 1830s, many
different photographic processes and materials have been utilized, each subject
to deterioration through time and with use. Although deterioration is an ongoing
natural process, nevertheless much can be done to slow the rate at which it
takes place in photographs, and in other materials.
Completion of the lower level project will make that space an important
tool in preserving the history of Gentry County.
